Can you hear me now! Muni riders could be enjoying the comforts that bart riders have enjoyed for many years. On Tuesday, the San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency’s Board of Directors approved a communications agreement with the Bay Area Rapid Transit District to allow Bart to enter into a license agreement with cellular carriers on behalf of the SFMTA to extend Bart’s fiber and cellular structure into Muni. They are pushing for a 15-year term with two five year options with carriers like AT&T, Verizon, Sprint, and T-Mobile. BART will be doing the negotiations for the SFMTA with the cellular networks. Construction to extend Bart’s network into Muni’s will take up to 18 months once BART reaches an agreement with cellular carriers and once funding from the carriers is secure, according to the SFMTA.
