BART’s SFO line has been steadily on the decline since the approval of ridesharing companies. Uber and Lyft have been given free rein to pick up and drop off passengers at SFO. The Examiner reports, Uber and Lyft’s use, increased six- fold for airport trips in 2014 were roughly 97,000. In 2016 the ridership grew to 578,211.
Meanwhile taxi services have also been hit but they’re still doing ok with 139.465 trips in 2016. This is taking a big chunk out of BART’s pocket as more people are opting to take ridesharing companies. This year BART’s SFO route was 9.6 percent under its projected budget. BART finds themselves in a position to figure out ways to compete with ridesharing companies.
